Viscose: What is it made from?

Viscose fabric is mainly used for women’s blouses, tunics and dresses. But also for lining of women’s and men’s jackets or blazers. This is because the fabric is very supple. Viscose is a fiber that is used as a substitute for silk because silk is very expensive. The viscose fiber is made by humans from cellulose from trees.

Unfortunately, many chemicals are used to make viscose yarns. The fibres extracted from wood are dissolved into a viscous chemical mass and pressed through a spinneret to form long yarns. Nowadays, sustainable clothing brands use the less environmentally damaging variant of viscose: lyocell / Tencel. When making the yarns, care is taken that the chemicals do not go back into the environment but are reused.
